We all serve someone or something, all the time, everyday. We work. We go to school, college, universities. Then we work. We earn money for our families, for a better life. We work harder and harder and we reach the pinnacle of success. That’s great, a better life for you and your family. Fantastic we have earned money, we have had success, we can live in peace. Some with their money decide to help others. They give some to refugees from Syria, the hungry in Africa, the homeless in India. They donate that money so someone else can have a better life, if not a better life, maybe a full stomach to sleep with for a night, and a little bit of hope, that somebody cares, there still are people with hearts on this planet. Not everyone has gone blank, heartless, and ruthless in the blindness of money. There still is humanity and love. Maybe they might even smile. It’s hard to imagine what some people go through to just get a bite of bread. They work for hours, through the day, through the night, but in the end they still don’t have enough food to spread in their family. They have to work everyday, and if they don’t they won’t have anything to eat. And now, in lockdown, we don’t have the slightest bit idea how this virus has flipped lives upside down. Our biggest excuse is that we get bored. Hmm. Bored, really. Emagine a little 3 or 4 year old going up to his dad, telling him, “ Dad, I’m hungry,” the tears in the dad’s eyes, he needs to feed his son. Really none of us know what hardship means. We think that if we don’t get to go out for pizza, it’s the end of the world. Selfless service doesn’t mean not caring for your family, it means caring for them more, so you can feel what other families have to go through. Especially now. We don’t have to worry about food. They do. “ The nourishment of the body is food, while the nourishment of the soul is feeding others.” This quote beautifully summarizes what I’m trying to say. When you help someone out, you’re not going to get anything in return, but it’s still gonna feel better than getting a thousand dollars. Because you get something that money can’t buy, and that’s love, that’s gratitude. And let me tell you no matter how many times you do it, it never gets old. The feeling is always amazing. It’s value never decreases like money. You know, when you don’t have that much money, 100 dollars seems like the most money in the world, but when you get more and more of it, it’s value decreases. That’s not how love is, it’s always there. You can see it in their eyes. The warmest feeling in the world, like when you cuddle in with your mom in a blanket on winter morning. Selflessness is rewarded, not with money, but with a better life, the type of life money could have never given you alone. Be grateful for what you have, and share with others. It’ll be worth it, I promise.
